Beyond the Veil

Beyond the Veil is a fully immersive, guided Samhain experience designed to be followed in real time as your evening unfolds.

This is not a standard online class where you simply listen to teaching and then complete activities afterwards. The audio itself guides you through the whole Samhain evening, step by step.

You prepare your space and materials beforehand, then press play and follow the experience as it happens. The guidance takes you through entering the ritual space, lighting the Old Year flame, ancestor honouring, remembrance, visualisation, divination, reflection, the final threshold ritual, welcoming the New Year and grounding afterwards.

The workshop combines historical and seasonal teaching with guided ritual practice, so the learning and the experience happen together rather than as separate parts.

Alongside the audio, you will also have access to the full written lessons, which contain the same material in text form. You can read ahead if you prefer, follow the written version instead of the audio, or return to particular sections afterwards.

There are also advance preparation sections covering the materials you will need, optional ritual preparations and recipes, and alternatives if you do not want to make everything yourself.

The experience is designed so that once your preparations are complete, you do not need to work out what comes next. The audio leads you naturally through each stage of the evening.

Prepare your space. Set aside your evening. Press play. Beyond the Veil will guide you through the rest.

A fully guided Immersive Audio Workshop

The audio talks you through the entire Samhain evening in real time, with full written lessons available alongside it if you prefer to read or follow in text.

For this immersive audio guided workshop, you will need:

Before beginning, gather everything you will need for the full evening. You do not need to make all six of the Samhain preparations provided in the pre-lesson. They are there if you want to create more of the ritual materials yourself, but simple alternatives are given below.

- Candles & Lighting

- 1 candle for the Old Year
- 1 candle for the New Year
- 1 candle for the Ancestors
- Secure candle holders
- Matches or a lighter
- Optional extra candles or lanterns

The three main candles can be any colour you already have. If you want to distinguish them, darker colours work well for the Old Year, a warm or light colour for the New Year, and a neutral or personally meaningful colour for the ancestor candle.

- Ancestor Altar

- Photographs of the people you wish to remember
- Written names if photographs are unavailable
- Heirlooms or personal objects connected with them
- Small plate or bowl for the food offering
- Small cup for the drink offering
- Dark bowl filled with water
- Old iron key to place beneath the water
- Optional altar cloth
- Optional seasonal items such as:
- Apples
- Hazelnuts
- Dried leaves
- Rowan
- Seed heads
- Autumn branches
- Old coins
- Iron objects

You do not need genuine family heirlooms. A handwritten name, photocopied photograph, favourite sweet, recipe card, button, book or other object that reminds you of someone works just as well.

- Beyond the Veil Ritual Oil - Optional

If you made the Beyond the Veil Ritual Oil from the pre-lesson, have it ready for dressing ritual objects and candles.

If you did not make it: use a small amount of plain olive, grapeseed or another vegetable oil, or simply leave the oil out altogether. Nothing in the evening depends upon having a specially prepared ritual oil.

- Nine-Herb Samhain Smoke Blend - Optional

If you prepared the Nine-Herb Samhain Smoke Blend, have it ready with a suitable heatproof burner and charcoal if required.

If you did not make it: use a favourite incense, a commercially made loose incense, a single suitable herb such as rosemary, or a scented candle. You can also work without smoke or fragrance entirely.

- Blackberry, Apple & Pomegranate Remembrance Cup - Optional

If you made the Blackberry, Apple & Pomegranate Remembrance Cup, prepare enough for your own drink and a small offering portion.

If you did not make it: use apple juice, blackberry juice, pomegranate juice, cider, wine, tea, water or another drink you enjoy. If you know the favourite drink of someone you are remembering, that can be particularly appropriate.

- Ancestor Cakes - Optional

If you baked the Ancestor Cakes, keep one or two aside for the offering and the rest for your own meal.

If you did not make them: use bread, cake, biscuits, fruit, a favourite family food or something connected with the person you are remembering. A shop-bought cake or biscuit is absolutely fine.

- Rowan & Apple Threshold Water - Optional

If you made the Rowan & Apple Threshold Water, have a small amount ready for the final crossing ritual.

If you did not make it: use a small bowl of fresh water. You may add a slice of apple, a sprig of rosemary or another safe seasonal plant if you want to give it a little more character, but plain water works perfectly well.

- Black Hearth Salt - Optional

If you prepared the Black Hearth Salt, have a small amount ready in a bowl or jar.
If you did not make it: use ordinary coarse sea salt, rock salt or table salt. Only a very small amount will be needed.

- Remembrance Supper

- Your own meal or selection of food
- Your own drink
- A small portion of food for the ancestor offering
- A small amount of drink for the ancestor offering
- Any of the prepared recipes you have chosen to use

The meal does not need to be elaborate. Soup and bread, cheese and fruit, a favourite family dish, cake and tea, or something bought ready-made are all suitable.

- Reflection & Divination

- Journal or several sheets of paper
- Pen
- Your usual divination method, such as:
- Tarot
- Oracle cards
- Ogham
- Runes
- Another system you already use

If you do not practise divination, you can simply use the five questions from the Beyond the Veil Spread as journal prompts instead.

- Optional Nine Token Samhain Casting

If you want to complete the Nine Token Casting, gather:

- 1 old coin
- 1 second small iron key, or another small object representing access and boundaries
- 1 hazelnut
- 1 apple seed
- 1 short piece of black thread
- 1 rowan berry
- 1 small bell
- 1 acorn
- 1 small piece of beeswax

If you cannot find the exact objects, substitute something that carries a similar meaning. A bead can replace the berry, a modern coin can replace an old one, a nut can replace the hazelnut, and a small candle stub can replace the beeswax.

- The Nine Knots

- A length of black cord, wool, ribbon or strong thread
- Scissors

Black is used because it visually suits the work with the Old Year, but another dark colour is completely acceptable.

- The Ash

- Small heatproof dish
- Small amount of clean, cool wood ash

If you do not have clean wood ash: use a small amount of charcoal powder from natural artist's charcoal, a little soil, or simply omit this part of the ritual. Do not use ash from treated timber, painted wood, rubbish, coal or unknown burned materials.

- Three Objects to Carry Forward

Choose three small objects that can fit comfortably in your hand. These will later represent the three qualities, values or commitments you choose to carry into the New Year.

These might be:

- Stones
- Coins
- Keys
- Acorns
- Hazelnuts
- Beads
- Small charms
- Shells
- Pieces of wood

They do not need to be specially purchased.

- Your Physical Threshold

Choose something that clearly marks the entrance to the space and can later be crossed safely.

You could use:

- A length of dark cord
- A line of fallen leaves
- Two lanterns
- Two branches
- Two stones
- Two old keys
- A strip of fabric
- An existing doorway

Do not create anything that could easily trip you when the lighting is low.

- Optional Atmosphere

You may also want:

- Background music
- Blanket or shawl
- Lanterns
- Extra candles
- Seasonal branches or foliage
- Apples, nuts or autumn fruit
- Dark or earthy fabrics
- A simmer pot
- Any personal Samhain decorations you already own

None of these are required.

The important materials are the three candles, the ancestor items and offering, your food and drink, your journal, black cord and scissors, three objects to carry forward, and a clearly marked threshold. Everything else can be included, substituted or left out according to what you have available.
